Start here.
If you’ve just arrived, begin with The Leaving.
It is the first story to emerge from Northing, told through the records left behind by the people who once lived there. New chapters are published here on Sundays.
Alongside the novel are shorter essays that follow the questions each chapter leaves behind. They are not explanations or companion notes. They are another way of looking. Sometimes they begin with an old photograph, a forgotten practice, a line from a ledger, or the feeling that a landscape can remember more than the people who cross it.
Northing is larger than the novel.
You will also find ambient films, artifacts, field observations, and other fragments gathered from the same place. They can be explored in any order. Nothing depends on having seen everything else.
If you prefer to begin at the beginning:
Read The Leaving, Chapter 1.
Continue with the accompanying essay.
Return each Sunday for the next chapter, with a shorter midweek reflection in between.
Or don’t.
Places are rarely discovered in order. You might arrive first by way of a stream, an abandoned orchard, an old map, or an hour of rain in the woods. However you enter, the landscape remains the same.
