Reading order

Northing is published as it is uncovered.

The first work to emerge is The Leaving, a serialized novel released one chapter at a time.

Each Sunday:

  • A new chapter of The Leaving.

Midweek:

  • A shorter essay precedes each issue, focused on a question, place, object, or idea it raises.

As chapters are published, this page will become the complete reading guide.

Northing Notes

Between the Sunday chapters, Northing Notes surfaces clues about and artifacts from this place. Some of it arrives here, in your inbox: short essays on what the chapters raise (the lost art of the orchard, how a place-name dies, what we owe a stranger’s letters, record-keeping as a kind of devotion), the occasional map, a note on a record or an object, and now and then a piece that never fit the story and would not leave it alone.

The rest of Northing lives out in the open, on its own surfaces. You are welcome to go and be with it.

The catalog. The records themselves, the maps and photographs and papers, gathered on are.na and browsable all at once, the way you would go through a box of them at a table.

The place, day by day. Northing as it stands, posted on Instagram across the seasons, no story and no captions to speak of, only the valley keeping its own hours.

The long view. Hours of the place, quiet and moving, on YouTube, to put on and let run while you do something else, or nothing.

None of it asks anything of you. It is there to be visited, the way a place is.
